# Novel coronavirus
I've been sent home to work from here due to the Coronavirus threat.
It's the current government recommendation to work from home if you
can. I feel bad for anyone who can't and in the longer term for
those who are out of a job because of the pandemic.
It's interesting to see how different governments and different
demographics deal with this. I think some 20 people have died here
so far, which is much less than what the flu usually reaps
throughout the flu season. In Italy on the other hand, a lot of
people have fallen victim to the virus. Italy has a somewhat older
median age than Sweden. From here, it looks like Italians are more
social than Swedes as well. They meet and eat together more
frequently (at least according to the respective stereotypes).
Finally, many more Swedes live in single households than Italians.
These are some cultural and demographical differences between us
that could account for some of the differences in spread.
The Italian government wants to keep italians inside throughout the
pandemic. In Sweden, the government has so far mostly offered
recommendations to the public and the private sector of the economy,
with a few hard rules (example: assemblies of >500 people are
forbidden). Society has noticably slowed down, but kids are still
outside playing, people still go shopping and grab a beer, take the
bus or train. Just not as many. I think Sweden's approach is a
little toothless, but that we're in a lucky seat culturally and
demographically.
Working from home has frankly been so-and-so. I'm used to working
from home from a previous job, but the client I work at isn't. Work
gets done, but the habits of communication probably need some time
to adjust. I also miss having multiple monitors and a proper work
space. In my home I have two desks, one which is occupied by a PC
running Windows for games, and another is for my MS-DOS and Amiga
setups. So I'm either in bed or on the couch working off my laptop
running Void Linux. Not great for my back.
When this passes over, I hope society will have learned a lesson or
two. I have good hopes that the economy will quickly recover.
# SC-55
In other news, I bought an SC-55. I wanted to use it mostly as a GM
module for composing while letting it double as a music playback
device for DOS games (a lot of old games had music composed using
this module). Love it so far, and Roland's GS is intriguing. I've
written a song with it and intend to write a whole album. The sounds
are somewhat familiar to most as Windows' software synthesizer used
a Roland wavetable AFAIK based on the SC-55, but the SC-55 has some
built-in effects and filters making it soun much more pleasant.
When I'm not using it for composing, I've setup a Raspberry Pi to
run a web server which immediately plays whichever MIDI file you
upload to it. I have a corresponding set of tools to quickly browse
and upload MIDI files from my laptop. With a huge archive of old GM
and GS files downloaded, this is so much fun! I had a friend over
and we sat all day just looking for cheesy MIDI renditions of all
kinds of songs we could think of.
