Workstations in 2017
====================

SGI O2
------

It was my main workstation (as if was from 2005). I got a spare one, just
to have a sort of backup. The spare one has low end R5000 CPU (200 MHz)
in contrast to my main one (R10000 CPU at 250 MHz). It have been used on
a daily basis, as it was in previous years. Of course, there is an
increasing number of tasks which cannot be done here (mostly www-related
ones but I also have found that there is an increasing number of PDF files
which are impossible or at least uncomfortable to read on the box).

SGI Indy
--------

Still have two of them and they were almost unused in 2017.

SGI IRIS Indigo
---------------

I have got a second one in 2017. The first one was an Indigo rebadged as a
Siemens-Nixdorf workstation. It was a 1st generation one (with a 32bit
MIPS R3000 CPU at 33 MHz) but with a mid-range graphics: an 24bit XL one with
a Z-buffer card attached (note that it is a machine from 1992 so that
hardware was very powerful in these days).
The new one is a 2nd generation box with a MIPS R4000 CPU (64bit, 100 MHz).
But it has only the "Entry" graphics (just 8bit colors, only 1024x768).
Actually, I use only the old one. It's fast enough to read Gopher pages
(even in the Netscape 3.x) and to some light programming and computing.
And it's even quieter than my O2.

SGI Octane
----------

I have got this monster in December 2017 so there was very little time to play
with it. It has two R12000 CPUs at 400 MHz, 2 GB of RAM and a SolidImpact (SI)
graphics. That means that for the Quake is not as good as the O2 (the
SolidImpact has no memory for textures) but for any floating-point computing
it is many times faster than the O2. Yes, it's slower than my Thinkpad with
the Core2Duo processors, but only a few times slower. Of course, its somewhat
noisy.

Intel Compute Stick with Ubuntu
-------------------------------

It simply died in the second half of the year. If I'm computing correctly it
was shortly after the end of it's 2-year warranty. No comment... I replaced
it with my old Thinkpad X61s. It's both faster (especially when I replaced
the the HDD but the SSD) and quieter.

iMac G5
-------

I started it only for a few times - just to test if it still lives. It is
less or more used as a DVD player and I found no time to watch movies...
