Uniform Regulations, 1833


UNIFORM
          ART. 592. The uniform which is or may be established, shall be worn by all officers who may be attached to any vessel
, navy yard, station, recruiting service, or hospital, for duty, except when they shall be absent from the station.

          ART. 593. All officers are to conform strictly to the uniform which is or may be established, and are prohibited from
 wearing the navy button upon any article of dress which does not conform to the prescribed uniform.

          ART. 594. Officers are expected to wear their uniform whenever they make an official visit to the President of the Un
ited States and the Secretary of the Navy.

          ART 595. Officers are to wear their uniform when acting as members of a court martial, or court of inquiry, or when a
ttending such courts as witnesses, or in any other official capacity.

          ART. 596. The undress uniform shall be worn upon such courts, unless the officer convening the same, or the president
 of the court, shall specially order the full dress to be worn.

          ART. 597. Officers constituting, or appearing before boards of examination, shall wear their undress uniforms.

          ART. 598. Officers are strictly prohibited from wearing their uniform when suspended from duty by sentence of a court
 martial.

          ART. 599. Officers on furlough are recommended not to wear their uniform except on special occasions.

          ART. 600. Petty officers shall wear the following marks of distinction:

Boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, carpenter's mates, masters at arms, ship's stewards, and ship's cooks, by an anchor on the r
ight sleeve of their jackets in winter, and frocks in summer.

Quartermasters, quarter gunners, captains of forecastles, captains of tops, armorers, coopers, ship's corporals, and captains o
f the hold, by an anchor, in the same manner, upon their left sleeve. 

The anchor shall be not more than three, nor less than two inches in length, placed half way between the elbow and shoulder, up
on the front of the sleeve: it shall be white when worn on a blue garment, and blue when worn on a white garment.

          ART. 601. The outside dress clothing of the petty officers, seamen, ordinary seamen, landsmen, and boys, shall consis
t of blue cloth jackets and trowsers, blue vest, blue cloth cap or black hat, black handkerchief, and shoes, when the weather i
s cold; when the weather is warm, it shall consist of white frock and trowsers, black or white hats, or blue cloth caps, as the
 commander may direct, having regard to the convenience and comfort of the crew, black handkerchiefs and shoes.
