===== WELCOME TO DISTROTUBE =========================================
Welcome to the DistroTube gopherhole! DistroTube (DT) is a YouTube
channel started by me, Derek Taylor (also DT), in October 2017, where
I initially focused on Linux distribution installations and reviews.
As the channel grows and I mature in my role as a content creator, I
am trying to spend more time on other Linux-related topics as well,
including: app reviews, terminal and command line tutorials, desktop
environment and window manager tutorials, Linux news and the
occasional live stream event.

===== MY VIDEO ARCHIVE =============================================
This is an archive of my YouTube videos that I have stored in s3
storage. The video links are http links directly to mp4 files. In
lynx, since you cannot watch video in a terminal browser, it will ask
you if you would like to download the video. In graphical browsers,
like Firefox or Chrome, you should be able to watch the video in the
browser.My Video Archive
===== WHY GOPHER RATHER THAN HTTP? ==================================
Gopher is an alternative protocol to the standard http (world wide
web) protocol. The modern web is slow, bloated and just sucks due
to the Internet being dominated by the likes of Google, Facebook,
PHP, databases, images, multimedia and, of course, advertisements!
It's not unusual to open Chrome of Firefox and push over 1GB of RAM
usage with just one tab open. This is absurd.
Gopher sites (called gopherholes) are a text-only alternative to
the web. You will need a gopher browser to view gopherholes. You
can install gopher plugins in Firefox and Chrome to view the
gopherspace. I can recommend the OverbiteWX plugin for Firefox.
Of course, since gopher is plain text (glorious plain text!), you
can use a terminal-based browser to view gopher. But like most GUI
browsers, most terminal browsers do not support gopher. I recommend
lynx which the oldest actively developed web browser (started in
1991) and does support gopher natively.

===== TOOLS USED TO BUILD MY GOPHERHOLE =============================
This gopherhole was built using Ubuntu Server and installing the
pygopherd package. I recommend you checkout pygopherd if you are
interested in setting up your own gopherhole. It is much, much
easier than setting up a LAMP stack and creating a modern website.Pygopherd HomeQuux.Org Mega ServerThe Gopher Project
